Outfit Of The Day | Spring Boho

I’m going to try to get into the habit of writing some more fashion-based posts. I enjoy reading them and getting inspiration so I thought, why not?

In the past, I would never have described my fashion-sense or home decor sense as ‘boho’, but the older I get the more I’m enjoying it. It helps that rattan items are extremely popular at the moment, too. I can’t say I’m always one to mindlessly follow the trends, but rattan and straw are two materials I love.

Straw Bags

My bag has already sold out on Topshop online – they may still have it in store, but I haven’t seen it. Luckily, Topshop has a really good selection of similar straw bags. This one is identical, apart from the floral embroidery on the front, which I really like, too.

There are also so many similar ones on ASOS, like this one from South Beach and this ASOS DESIGN one. You can get a version of the circular straw bag from most high-street retailers at the moment.

The popularity of straw bags doesn’t end with the cross body or over-the-shoulder kind. In fact, almost every ‘type’ of bag has a straw equivalent. Topshop does have the best selection – in my opinion – so I’ve used some of their options to highlight my point.

If you’re looking for a bigger day bag, I’d opt for something like this straw tote. It has the same pattern as the one I linked above, but it’s the bigger version. This is great for holidays, too.

Macrame bags are also very popular right now. I think they’re a really cool take on the classic shopper bag that you’d take to the supermarket. The material is particularly strong so you can fit quite a lot of food in them! This off-white bag is the perfect option if you’re in the market for macrame.

If you’re looking for something a little smarter, black straw bags might be the way to go. This one is a nod to the trend without being overpowering. Personally, I’d be happy wearing this to a meeting, whereas I think my natural straw one is more of a weekend bag.

Finally, I thought it’d only be fair to highlight the pom-pom bag. Pom-poms are a very integral part of the boho theme right now and this bag is actually on my wishlist because I think it’s beautiful.

Boho Accessories

Accessories can make or break an outfit, and I must admit, this has always been an area of fashion I’ve struggled with. Brands like Missoma are really leading the way when it comes to boho jewellery. The items available on the website, though, are too expensive for what is ultimately trend-led jewellery.

There are so many Missoma dupes out there, though. The necklace in the picture above is from a brand called Orelia on ASOS. It’s a great dupe of the Lucy Williams x Missoma collaboration and for £22 versus £95 for the Missoma one, this is a steal.

ASOS does really good dupes for most of Missoma’s jewellery. Another great option is J&Co. I’ve bought quite a few bits from there and have been very impressed with the quality and price. I do have a couple of Missoma necklaces that I love, so I’m not saying don’t make the investment, but, I don’t think the quality of the item quite demands the price tag.

Shoes With Personality

I am obsessed with shoes – the weirder and more colourful the better. I’m quite safe with my clothes, so I like to go all out with my shoes and bags.

These ASOS Design Suede Embroidered Heels fit into Jo Elvin’s hashtag #clothesmyhusbandhates perfectly. They’re not necessarily a crowd pleaser, but luckily I’m only trying to please myself!

These particular shoes *may* have to go back; I need to do a few more walks around the house first. They tie around your ankle and I’ve found that as soon as I walk the ties come loose very easily. I hope I can find a way to fix this because I love them.

There are loads of different ways to incorporate the boho trend into your shoe collection. I think there’s something great about block heels paired with an ankle tie up for this trend. These black block heels aren’t only perfect for the office or for dressing up, but they also add a little bit of originality to your look.

Sometimes it only takes a pop of colour – like these red Bershka block heels – to really liven up an outfit. If you’re not big on high heels, flat shoes can be equally as versatile. I am completely in love with these ASOS Design Espadrilles – in fact, they’re next on my purchase list.

Maxi/Midi Dresses

Maxi dresses were the original marker of a good boho outfit; the floatier the better, and that is still largely true. In the past couple of years, midi dresses have had a resurgence (which I’m all for) but I’ve noticed a lot more maxis around this spring.

My maxi dress – as shown in the picture below – is from Y.A.S and is just perfect. It’s really flattering, it can be worn with flats or heels and dressed up or down for work or something more casual. Its flared cuffs and ruffled hem are both signs of a good boho dress, but here are some other characteristics to look out for…

The print plays quite a key role in this style. When people are experimenting with the boho theme they tend to go for heavily patterned – like this – or vertically striped, like this. The second option gets double boho points, too, because it’s off-the-shoulder.

My other main indication is the use of embroidery. Embroidery and embellishment are both popular within this trend. This Abercrombie & Fitch dress incorperates a number of key elements – including the embroidery – really well. Equally, so does this QED London dress.

Most dresses you’ll find under the ‘boho’ heading aren’t fitted, so if you tend to lean more towards fitted clothes, this trend might not be for you.
